How to choose an ATPL ground school in 2026: a buyer's guide

Modular vs integrated, classroom vs distance learning, cost ranges, pass rates, and the four questions that actually separate a good ATPL school from a bad one.

For most cadets, the ATPL ground school is the most expensive decision they make before stepping into a sim. A good choice gets you through the 14 EASA exams with a clear shot at airline selection. A poor one can cost an extra 6-12 months and €5-10k of catching up.

Choose the training model first

Integrated or modular sets the cost, the timeline and which airlines will look at you.

IntegratedModular
Duration18-24 months24-36 months
Cost (2026, EU)€80k-€130k€55k-€90k
FormatContinuous, full-timeSelf-paced phases
RecruitmentStrongest with cadet-pipeline carriersSame access on the open market
Best fitCareer changers with savings, ab-initioWorking students, hour-builders

The cadet-pipeline argument is overstated. Outside a few branded MPL programmes, your EASA frozen ATPL is the same document whether you trained integrated or modular.

EASA ATOs and non-EASA "exam prep" providers

Only an EASA-approved ATO (Approved Training Organisation) can sign you off for the written exams. Some providers without ATO approval sell question-bank prep but cannot present you to the CAA. Check the ATO approval number on your national CAA's public register before you pay any deposit.

Classroom or distance learning

Distance learning grew from about 30% of the European ATO market before 2020 to over 60% by 2025.

A residential course means 4-6 months on site, led by instructors, with a full peer cohort. It suits people who want to finish fast and need the discipline of a classroom. Distance learning takes 12-18 months of self-study with short residential blocks for revision and exam sittings, and suits people who are working or tied to one place.

Distance pass rates have largely caught up. The gap that was once in double digits has narrowed to a few points at well-run providers, and today study discipline and access to a tutor matter more than the delivery format.

Four questions to put to a school in writing

Brochures do not answer these, so email the school and ask for written replies.

  1. What was the first-attempt pass rate per subject over the last 12 months? An "overall pass rate" includes 3rd and 4th sittings. A school that will not share per-subject figures is telling you something.
  2. Is a question-bank licence included? Aviationexam, BGS and ATPL Questions are the usual ones. A serious ATO bundles at least one; if yours does not, add €120-€220 to your budget.
  3. Who books the exam sittings, and are re-sits charged extra? Some schools bundle them and some do not, so settle it before you sign.
  4. Can you sit exams at your nearest CAA centre, or are you tied to the school's nominated centre, with the travel that implies?

Clear, specific answers to all four are a good sign.

Subject difficulty in 2026, ranked

Use this ranking to plan your study time. Every ATPL student sits every subject, so it will not help you choose a school.

  1. Principles of Flight, the heaviest theory load
  2. General Navigation, the all-nighter subject
  3. Performance, heavy on formulas
  4. Air Law, memorisation across a wide scope
  5. Operational Procedures, mostly reading regulation
  6. Meteorology, weather and its interpretation
  7. Mass and Balance
  8. Flight Planning
  9. Instrumentation
  10. Aircraft General Knowledge
  11. Radio Navigation
  12. VFR and IFR Communications
  13. Human Performance

Most candidates clear 9-10 subjects in the first sitting block and the remaining 4-5 in a second. Plan for two trips to the exam centre, not one heroic week.

Red flags

  • A large upfront payment with no instalment option.
  • Any promise of guaranteed airline placement. No European ATO can guarantee it.
  • Reluctance to share exam pass rates.
  • No live instructor contact during distance learning. Expect at least 4 hours a week of office hours or webinars.
  • Pressure to commit on the day of a site visit.

How Veejo helps

The exam tracker follows your subjects, your sittings and the 18-month window you have to complete ATPL theory. Pilot tutors include pilots who passed the exams in the last 2 to 5 years; when you are stuck on a subject, one 30-minute session costs far less than a re-sit. Morris answers subject questions around the clock, with unlimited queries on the free plan, and the ATPL Pass adds answers reviewed by a pilot.
